East Sussex Astronomical Society

Welcome to the East Sussex Astronomical Society.

Founded in 1999, we run monthly meetings in Bexhill-on-Sea with regular presentations by guest speakers. We hold star parties, observing groups, outreach and social events. We are a friendly society and welcome anyone interested in the night sky and our daytime star, the Sun -- from complete beginners to experienced observers and astrophotographers.

Solar Eclipse 2026

Wednesday 12th August

De La Warr Pavilion south lawns

Marina, Bexhill-on-Sea, TN40 1DP

ESAS will be on the south lawns of De La Warr Pavilion for this month's partial solar eclipse. You will be able to view Sun using safe-to-use solar telescopes and other equipment. Solar viewing glasses for your safety will also be on sale for £2 each.

The eclipse will begin just after 6:15pm with a maximum coverage of around 92% occuring at 7:14pm. The eclipse will end at 8:07pm when the Sun will be low in the sky, about 40 minutes before sunset.

The DLWP will have two hands-on projects for you to make during the Eclipse:

  • A pinhole camera to project the Sun for sae viewing
  • A spectroscope to show the colours that sunlight is made up of

If you are interested in viewing the eclipse, joining our society, or just curious about the night sky and our Sun, come along.

ESAS Annual Picnic

Saturday 15th August from 6:30pm

Ashburnham Cricket Pavilion, Ashburnham, Battle TN33 9NU

Our August event is the ESAS Annual Picnic at our dark site at the Ashburnham Cricket Ground, starting at 6:30pm. The event is open to ESAS members, family and friends. There will be short presentations from Andy and Martin (ther August Sky Diary), telescopes and binoculars for viewing the night sky and we hope to see meteors from the Perseid meteor shower

Bring your own picnic food and drinks, and there are tea/coffee making facilities and toilets at the site.

Note: There is no Thursday evening meeting this month.

New ESAS website

Our new website has launched.

Please note that the new website is work in progress, and replaces the previous website which is no longer fully supported. At launch this website will show information about the society and becoming a member, recent news about the latest events and meetings and how to download the most recent copy of our monthly newsletter Albedo.

In the coming weeks and months more information will be added, including more content from the old website, so please keep checking back with us.

Greg Smye-Rumsby is a Greenwich Planetarium presenter, his talks are never dull. The information and enthusiasm Greg puts into these presentations is second to none. You will leave with a sense of awe and wonder!
